Custom made solenoids are primarily push or pull motion devices that utilize an electro mechanical field generated by electric or battery operated coils which when energizing/ de-energizing to generate an electrical field that will move the plunger precisely as needed in a linear or rotational direction based on the application. In addition to push/pull solenoids, Incoils also does rotary solenoids, which instead of the plunger moving in and out, the shaft extending from the rotary will move clockwise or counter clockwise. Solenoids are typically DC devices but AC is also available as well.

Have you ever thought of how the engine of your car starts once the key is turned? Or the way the doorbell rings when the button is pressed? How the irrigation system turns on in your lawn? The simple daily occurrences take place due to a small coil of wire that is used in the form of an electromagnet. It is called the solenoid valve. It is a component which converts electrical energy into mechanical, thus producing a magnetic reaction. It happens whenever the current runs through the wire.
The solenoid appears in the shape of a corkscrew with an iron piston casing. The device works in the form of a plunger, activating a device when it is in motion. Once simulated, the device is switched on with the magnetic field pulling the armature, irrespective of the pivot or plunger, against the action of the spring. If the activation ceases, the plunger or the pivoted armature gets back to the original position from its coil. These valves have multiple uses – like activating a fluid or hydraulic capacitated system. The valves are also used for powering or operating the central heating in homes, dishwashers and other systems or appliances that are powered by fluid or gas.
The main utility of the valves is to expel, mix or turn off gases or fluids for creating power within these systems or devices. The sixes of these valves tend to vary especially in the amount of the outlet port connections which they have. A few have a couple of ports whereas the rest contain multiple ports. Those with 2 ports are used for switching a system or device on or off. Valves with multiple ports help in switching the control in current between the various ports of the outlet. Other than different kinds of port connections, there are direct acting valves and the externally or internally piloted valves.
All sorts of these valves have functions that are similar to one another, but their scales or levels of performance might tend to vary. Direct acting valves activate the electric current in the valve which again pulls a plunger or a piston which would have otherwise blocked the fluid or air from flowing in. The case in a few valves is that the electromagnetic field will not directly act for opening the conduit. In valves that are pilot operated, the solenoids move the plunger that creates a minor opening. The valve seal is operated through the pressure in the opening. If the current is halted, the electromagnetic field will disperse and the valve will close.

Solenoid is derived from the Greek words ‘solen’ which means a pipe or a channel and ‘eidos’ which means form or shape. A solenoid is simply a coil which is wound in tight helix. A solenoid essentially consists of a wire which is wound around a solid steel and iron. When current is passed through such a coil it becomes electromagnetically charged such that the movable core draws into the coil when current flows and it is this principle that is used for making a switch or in case of a mechanical device, a valve.
The applications of solenoid are immense and just some of these have been enumerated below.
Commercial appliances: Valves are essentially switches, the only difference being while the former controls mechanical devices the latter controls electrical devices. These solenoid valves therefore control the flow of hydraulic fluids and they often operate at pressures of around 3000 psi. These solenoids control the movement of oil to the actuators or rams. Such types of valves are often used in irrigation systems and also in our household appliances like the washing machine where they control the flow of water.
Automobile Industry: Solenoid is an integral part of the automobile ignition and starter system. Normally the starter solenoid receives very small current from the ignition and a very large current from the car battery. The moment you turn on the ignition switch pair of heavy contacts in the starter solenoid are closed thus allowing the larger current from the battery to flow. Often starter solenoids are built on the starter itself.
Electromechanical solenoids: They consist of an inductive coil which is electromechanical and wound around an armature. The coil is so wound so as to enable the armature to move from its mean position and thereby becoming an electromagnet by altering the coil’s inductance. This armature then provides the mechanical force necessary to move a mechanism for example a valve. The advantage is that they have a very short reaction time. Electromechanical solenoids are commonly used in pinball machines, fuel injectors, and dot matrix painters.
Security: Many automatic systems today incorporate solenoids. When in a locked position the solenoid does not consume power, however it needs a small current to unlock therefore some solenoids also incorporate battery packs. They are installed in high security areas, factories and offices.
Medical: With the advent of modern electronic machines, solenoids have increasingly become an important part of the medical field. They form an essential component of the dialysis machine, with a pair of two solenoids the dialysis machine controls the blood flow. A dosing machine which is used to ingest medicine into the blood flow also uses solenoids.
